Synthesis of Voids
2nd place national competition — a public ramp and spatial reactivation of a symbolic administrative building in Konak Square, İzmir.

Details
Concept
Synthesis of Voids aims to expose the data in order to navigate the journey without interruption. It builds the bridge between Konak Square — which has accumulated historical layers — and its new formation, just like the layers accumulated in an archaeological area.
Leaving this building in Konak Square, located in the administrative periods of the country, to the citizens transforms it into a symbolic image and enables a recovery of public trust. The existing coastal space, Kemeraltı region, and this administrative public space combine to fulfill the necessity of presenting the treasure inside to the city. It aims to re-discover the orientation to the sea and the square, while remaining aware of Sarı Kışla.
Design Steps
Step 1 — Reading the Voids In the current situation, it was observed that the courtyard inside the building can interact with the square and the seaside voids near it.
Step 2 — Opening to the Square Landscape elements that prevented citizens from communicating with the courtyard were removed on the side facing the square. The courtyard starting from the upper level was opened. The façade of the building was preserved while a massive lightening was made in terms of orientation toward Konak Square and the sea.
Step 3 — Mass Orientation A form was provided that supports the square-coast-courtyard trilogy and expresses the flow. The green texture flowing from the beach was infiltrated into the courtyard, and the synthesis of spaces was achieved using the same material on the square and courtyard floors.
Step 4 — The Public Ramp After the massive lightening achieved in the building, a ramp was designed that belongs entirely to the public — allowing use day and night at any time and offering different experiences along the route.
The Ramp
The ramp, which belongs to the citizens, gives the opportunity to observe different relations as you ascend from the starting point. The sea-courtyard relationship appears first, then the square is added, and at higher elevations, the opportunity to circulate throughout the building while observing the officials-public interface becomes possible.
